The rich beauty and craftsmanship of leather objects dating from 1900-1929 is captured here in 540 beautiful color photos. These items include fine leather accessories, such as billfolds, blotters, bookends, boxes, cigar cases, document cases, glove cases, mats, napkin rings, paperweights, purses and wastebaskets. Many were made to enhance American interiors with Stickley furniture, Van Erp lamps, and Roycroft hammered copper items. Others were of a very personal nature and carried daily by both men and women.

Historical information features individual artists and commercial firms. It includes Roycroft, Cordova Shops, Wilro Shops and Elizabeth Eaton Burton. German design influence that became known as "Buffalo Nouveau" is included.

This is an essential guide to the hand-modeled craftsmanship of this bygone era.

Leather buyers take note...

Whether you're a dealer or collector, this work will aid your buying decision, especially at estate sales and internet offerings and auctions. It describes commercial makers; presents their shop marks; and tells you what minor defects will reduce the item's collectibility or value to a "don't buy it" decision.

It also shows some of the finer work produced by individual, and very collectible artisans, in spite of some minor defects. There is also worthy data that explains how to clean and preserve even the most soiled leather article. Turn that 25-cent buy into a $100 sale!

Here's what others are saying...

"Lees book should go far toward bringing Arts and Crafts leatherwork out of history's shadows. The color, embossing and carving-even the texture of the leather itself, revealed by how it reflects light-all but jump off the page."
American Bungalow, Issue #65, Feb.-May 2010, pg. 112

"With Artistic Leather of the Arts and Crafts Era, Daniel Lees has given collectors a map of the last Arts & Crafts frontier, complete with names, dates, histories, facts and locations."
Antiques Roadshow Insider, January, 2010

"For the past decade I've been a passionate dealer and collector of these lovely leather items and thought I knew a lot. But after reading your book, I realize how much I don't. I enjoy your book on a daily basis and continually utilize it for reference and identification, not to mention sheer viewing pleasure."
A Chicago antique dealer, 2010

"This is a book that has been needed by scholars and collectors alike for many years. A real "Catalogue raisonne" of the many Arts & Crafts men and women who designed some of the most beautiful items of the Arts & Crafts Era. This will now be the guidebook for the collectors."
A Denver antique dealer and historian, 2010

There's always room for one more fine example of leather artistry in Faire's collection. We favor the commercial work produced around Buffalo, NY that is marked Cordova Shops, Kaser or Roycroft. And we dearly love the quality of the individual woman artisans such as Elizabeth Burton of California, the Dolese sisters Wilro Shop of Chicago and the girls at Newcomb College of New Orleans.
